How Category A, B and C Schools Work
Understand what school categories mean, what they do not mean, and how to use categories responsibly when selecting schools.
Key point: Categories organise schools for selection. They are not a complete ranking of teaching quality, learner welfare or future success.

Use categories as a constraint, not a verdict
School categories help structure the selection exercise and manage demand. Category A schools often attract intense competition, but the category alone does not tell a family whether the learner's preferred programme, boarding place, location, support environment or learning needs will be met.
A Category B or C school can be the stronger personal choice when it offers the right programme, is realistically accessible and provides an environment in which the learner can participate fully. Avoid language that labels a learner or school as inferior because of a category letter.
Why an all-Category-A list is fragile
High-demand choices compete for limited programme and residential places. Even a strong BECE result does not create a vacancy. A list concentrated in the most competitive schools can fail to provide a realistic placement route.
Apply the category limits printed in the current official register. Within those limits, mix ambition with programme fit and credible alternatives. A balanced list gives the placement system more acceptable ways to match the candidate.
Compare schools inside the same category
- Confirm the programme rather than assuming every school in a category offers it.
- Compare day and boarding availability separately.
- Consider travel time, transport reliability and the true cost of attendance.
- Check gender eligibility and any documented SEN support.
- Look at district and regional alternatives before choosing only nationally famous schools.
A useful decision test
Ask: “If this were the only placement offered, would the learner attend this school for this programme and residential status?” If the honest answer is no, the school should not appear merely to complete a category slot.
