Common School-Selection Mistakes Parents Make
Avoid prestige-driven, rushed and unverified decisions that can leave a candidate with an unusable list.

Choosing for status
A school’s popularity does not prove programme fit, residential availability or learner wellbeing. Treat reputation as one question to investigate, not the decision itself.
Ignoring the learner
The learner must live with the programme, travel and school environment. Parents should challenge unrealistic assumptions while still taking the learner’s interests and concerns seriously. A forced programme can damage motivation long after placement.
Failing to verify details
- Using an old register or an unofficial list.
- Assuming a programme exists because a school offered it previously.
- Confusing day/boarding status with a guaranteed boarding vacancy.
- Entering the wrong school code or preference order.
- Selecting distant schools without a workable travel plan.
- Treating alternatives as disposable filler.
Paying for promises
Do not pay anyone who claims they can upgrade BECE results, create a vacancy or guarantee a placement. Use official WAEC, GES, CSSPS and school channels, and report suspicious requests through the appropriate authority.
