How to Balance Five Main Choices and Two Alternatives
A practical method for creating a coherent school list with aspirational, balanced and safer options.
Key point: Every choice should be acceptable, programme-compatible and placed in honest preference order. Alternatives are part of the plan, not filler.

Start with non-negotiables
Write down the learner's required programme, gender eligibility, realistic regions and residential constraints. Remove any school that fails a non-negotiable before discussing category or prestige. This prevents families from building an impressive-looking list that the learner cannot use.
Assign each main choice a role
These roles are planning labels, not CSSPS classifications or guarantees. Category, demand and vacancies can change, and SchoolFinder Ghana does not predict placement cut-offs.
- Aspirational: a high-demand school that strongly fits the learner.
- Balanced: a suitable school with moderate expected competition.
- Safer: a suitable option expected to face less pressure, not an unwanted fallback.
- Location safeguard: a school the family can manage as a day option.
- Programme safeguard: a school that reliably preserves the preferred pathway.
Treat alternatives seriously
Use only schools identified as eligible alternatives in the current official register. Confirm that both alternatives offer a programme and location the learner can accept. Do not choose them based only on proximity or because a friend selected them.
Discuss alternatives before the form is submitted. A learner who understands the purpose of each choice is less likely to reject a valid placement under pressure.
Run a final stress test
- Does every school offer the intended programme?
- Does the boarding/day mix follow the current official form?
- Are category limits satisfied?
- Can the family afford transport and non-covered personal costs?
- Would the learner enrol at every selected school?
- Have school codes and spellings been checked twice?
