CSSPS Self-Placement: Step-by-Step Preparation

Understand when self-placement applies and how to choose responsibly from schools with available vacancies.

When self-placement is relevant

GES guidance describes self-placement as an option for candidates who did not secure automatic placement in their submitted choices. It is not a general opportunity to exchange a valid placement for any preferred school.

The portal displays schools, programmes and residential options with vacancies for which the candidate is eligible. A school that does not appear should not be treated as secretly available.

Prepare before opening the portal

  • Agree on acceptable regions and the maximum day-school journey.
  • Rank acceptable programmes before ranking school names.
  • Decide whether boarding, day within catchment or day outside catchment is manageable.
  • Keep two or three acceptable fallback combinations ready.
  • Use a secure device and the official portal announced by GES or CSSPS.

Evaluate each vacancy

Read the full combination: school, location, programme and residential status. Confirm that the learner can enrol under those exact terms. Do not select quickly because a school name is familiar while overlooking an unsuitable programme or an impossible commute.

After making a selection

Save and print the placement record. Follow the stated enrolment process and contact the school through verified channels. Older GES guidance notes that changes cease once a candidate enrols, so resolve major questions before completing enrolment and follow the current year's instructions.

Independent guidance: verify current rules and vacancies through the official register, GES, CSSPS, WAEC and the candidate’s school.
