What to Do When a Candidate Is Not Placed
A calm, practical checklist for checking results, correcting assumptions and using official self-placement.
Key point: Not receiving an automatic placement is a problem to solve, not a verdict on the learner. Verify the record, understand the status and use official vacancy options.

Confirm the exact status
Use the official placement channel and check the candidate details carefully. Distinguish between not being placed, an incomplete result, a withheld result, an eligibility issue and a technical access problem. These situations require different responses.
If results are withheld or cancelled
Follow WAEC's official notices and contact channels. A school-selection website cannot resolve an examination investigation or change a result. Avoid intermediaries who request payment to “upgrade” grades or release results.
If eligible for self-placement
- Review available programmes before school popularity.
- Check the location and residential status shown.
- Choose an option the candidate will actually attend.
- Print the placement record and verify reporting instructions.
Protect the learner's confidence
Do not frame the outcome as personal failure. Placement reflects results, preferences, eligibility, demand and capacity. Focus the discussion on the next acceptable route and the learner's long-term development.
