Programme-Fit Checklist Before Selecting a School

A structured conversation that connects strengths, interests, subject combinations and future options.

Key point: Choose a programme after comparing evidence about the learner and the school. A career title alone is too narrow a basis for a three-year pathway.

Review the learner

  • Subjects the learner understands and enjoys consistently.
  • Whether the learner prefers reading, calculation, making, investigation, performance or service.
  • Study habits and areas where support is needed.
  • Health, disability or accessibility needs affecting participation.
  • Several possible future directions rather than one fixed job title.

Review the programme

Read the current NaCCA subject-combination guidance and the school’s offered combination. Find out how the subjects are assessed and what practical work is expected. Compare later prerequisites for more than one progression route.

Review the school

  • Is the programme confirmed for this intake?
  • Are the relevant facilities and practical opportunities available?
  • Can the family manage the residential and transport plan?
  • Is there a credible alternative school offering the same pathway?

Make a reversible plan where possible

Young people’s interests develop. Prefer subject combinations that preserve sensible options when the learner is uncertain, while still avoiding a pathway that clearly conflicts with present strengths. Ask a teacher who knows the learner’s work for evidence, not a prediction based on one examination.
