Region and District School-Selection Strategy
Use geography, transport and local alternatives to make a school list more practical and resilient.

Start with a travel map
Divide locations into daily commute, manageable boarding travel and impractical travel. Use realistic transport routes and costs rather than straight-line distance alone. Seasonal road conditions and the need to change vehicles can transform a short map distance into a difficult journey.
Compare local programme supply
Search the district and neighbouring districts for schools offering the preferred programme. A nearby Category B or C school can provide a stronger complete fit than a distant high-demand school when family support, attendance and travel reliability are considered.
Do not diversify blindly
- Confirm that a relative can genuinely support the learner if that is part of the plan.
- Estimate term-opening and emergency travel costs.
- Check health, disability and safeguarding needs in the proposed location.
- Verify the programme and residential option independently of the map.
